Sunday 10 May 2020 – Evening Service

10th May 2020

Good evening! Welcome to this ‘virtual’ gathering of God’s people here in
Wolverton and beyond! We want to spend the next hour worshipping
God and seeking His face together.

‘The Lord is my light and salvation – whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
…My heart says of You, “Seek His face!”

Your face, Lord, I will seek.’

Psalm 27:1,8

Hymn – The Lord is my salvation

  1. The grace of God has reached for me
    And pulled me from the raging sea
    And I am safe on this solid ground
    The Lord is my salvation

  2. I will not fear when darkness falls
    His strength will help me scale these walls
    I’ll see the dawn of the rising sun
    The Lord is my salvation

    Who is like the Lord our God?
    Strong to save, faithful in love
    My debt is paid and the victory won
    The Lord is my salvation

  3. My hope is hidden in the Lord
    He flow’rs each promise of His Word
    When winter fades I know spring will come
    The Lord is my salvation

  4. In times of waiting, times of need
    When I know loss, when I am weak
    I know His grace will renew these days
    The Lord is my salvation

    Who is like the Lord our God?
    Strong to save, faithful in love
    My debt is paid and the victory won
    The Lord is my salvation

  5. And when I reach my final day
    He will not leave me in the grave
    But I will rise He will call me home
    The Lord is my salvation

    Who is like the Lord our God?
    Strong to save, faithful in love
    My debt is paid and the victory won
    The Lord is my salvation

    Glory be to God the Father
    Glory be to God the Son
    Glory be to God the Spirit
    The Lord is our salvation

    Who is like the Lord our God?
    Strong to save, faithful in love
    My debt is paid and the victory won
    The Lord is our salvation

    The Lord is our salvation
    The Lord is our salvation

Prayer

(from The Valley of Vision, a collection of Puritan prayers.)

GOD OF THE PASSING HOUR,
Another week has gone and I have been
          preserved
        in my going out,
        in my coming in.
Thine has been the vigilance that has turned
    threatened evils aside;
Thine the supplies that have nourished me;
Thine the comforts that have indulged me;
Thine the relations and friends that have
    delighted me;
Thine the means of grace which have edified me;
Thine the Book, which, amidst all my enjoyments,
    has told me that this is not my rest,
    that in all successes one thing alone is needful,
      to love my Saviour.
Nothing can equal the number of thy mercies
  but my imperfections and sins.
These, O God, I will neither conceal nor palliate,
  but confess with a broken heart.
In what condition would secret reviews
    of my life leave me
  were it not for the assurance that with thee
    there is plenteous redemption,
    that thou art a forgiving God,
      that thou mayest be feared!
While I hope for pardon through the blood
    of the cross,
  I pray to be clothed with humility,
      to be quickened in thy way,
      to be more devoted to thee,
      to keep the end of my life in view,
      to be cured of the folly of delay and indecision,
      to know how frail I am,
      to number my days and apply my heart
        unto wisdom.

Hymn

Be Thou my vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art -
Thou my best thought, by day or by night;
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my great Father; and I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one.

Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight
Be Thou my dignity, be Thou my might
Thou my soul shelter, and Thy my high tower
Raise Thou me heavenwards, O power of my power

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only the first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, when battle is won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Prayer

  • Praise God for His many mercies to us in this time of trial.
  • Pray for one another in our different experiences of lockdown.
  • Read Ephesians 3:14-21, and use Paul’s prayer as a basis for your own.
  • Pray that God would speak to us as we listen to His word being preached.

Reading

For the next few weeks, we will be looking at the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. Our focus will be on Ephesians 5:18-21, but we will read now the whole chapter so we can see these verses in their context.

Sermon

Be filled with the Spirit part 1 – The Spirit-filled Condition

Hymn

For Your gift of God the Spirit
For your gift of God the Spirit,
pow’r to make our lives anew,
pledge of life and hope of glory,
Savior, we would worship you.
Crowning gift of resurrection
sent from your ascended throne,
fullness of the very Godhead,
come to make your life our own.

He, who in creation’s dawning
brooded on the lifeless deep,
still across our nature’s darkness
moves to wake our souls from sleep,
moves to stir, to draw, to quicken,
thrusts us through with sense of sin;
brings to birth and seals and fills us–
saving Advocate within.

He, himself the living Author,
wakes to life the sacred Word,
reads with us its holy pages
and reveals our risen Lord.
He it is who works within us,
teaching rebel hearts to pray,
he whose holy intercessions
rise for us both night and day.

He, the mighty God, indwells us;
his to strengthen, help, empower;
his to overcome the tempter
ours to call in danger’s hour.
In his strength we dare to battle
all the raging hosts of sin,
and by him alone we conquer
foes without and foes within.

Father, grant your Holy Spirit
in our hearts may rule today,
grieved not, quenched not, but unhindered,
work in us his sovereign way.
Fill us with your holy fullness,
God the Father, Spirit, Son;
in us, through us, then, forever,
shall your perfect will be done.

Prayer

Pray that the Lord would fill us with His Spirit, that we would be a ‘Spirit-filled church’, under the influence of God through His Word and Spirit. Pray that we would neither grieve nor quench the Spirit, but live our lives under His Lordship.

Blessing

‘Now the Father who chose you, the Son who bought you, and the Spirit who dwells in you, go before you in your darkness, stand beside you in your fears and hold you up in you sorrows until Jesus comes. Amen.’
